The new Mercado São José returns to Laranjeiras

The new Mercado São José returns to Laranjeiras

After seven long years behind closed doors, the Mercado São José Laranjeiras has finally reopened its doors, and honestly, it feels like welcoming back an old friend. Since September 2025, the neighborhood has gained back one of its most beloved meeting points, now reborn as a contemporary culinary and cultural hub that still carries that unmistakable alma carioca.

A little bit of history

Originally opened in 1944, Mercado São José was born out of necessity, created to supply the city during wartime. But over time, it became much more than a place to shop. It turned into a neighborhood living room, a spot to chat, linger, and feel the slow rhythm of Laranjeiras. For generations, it’s been a symbol of local life and community pride, protected as part of the area’s heritage.

The 2025 rebirth

This new chapter of the New Mercado São José blends the old and the new beautifully. The carefully restored building now hosts a handpicked selection of small producers, chefs, and artisans, from organic fruits and regional cheeses to specialty coffees, handmade pastas, and fermented goods. There’s even an artisanal bakery, bars serving creative cocktails, and restaurants that capture Rio’s diverse flavors.

It’s more than a food market, it’s an experience built around quality and connection. The relaunch honors the original purpose of the space: a place to eat, chat, and celebrate local life. There are 16 operations including local producers, shops, bars, and restaurants; rooftop terrace and elevator access.

What’s new for visitors

Step inside and you’ll notice the care taken in the restoration. The historical features — that century-old fountain, the patterned tiles, the gentle curve of the ironwork — have been lovingly brought back to life. But the space also looks to the future: there’s now a modern three-story annex with an elevator, climate-controlled areas (a blessing in Rio’s summer!), cozy patios, and an open-air rooftop perfect for a golden-hour drink.

The idea is to make it a full-day experience. Spend your afternoon tasting cheeses and sweets downstairs, then head up for sunset cocktails as the neighborhood starts to hum with live music and evening lights.

Carioca insider tips

  • Start downstairs: talk to the local vendors, they’re proud of what they make and happy to share a taste or a story. Try the cheeses, doces caseiros, and take home a bag of freshly roasted coffee.
  • Continue upstairs: the rooftop is pure magic. Grab a seat for sunset, order a small plate and a caipirinha (or a craft beer), and enjoy the local vibe.
  • Weekends: check the program! There’s often live samba, DJ sets, or community events that give the market that signature malemolência carioca.
